An interview with Hoos
Hoos is a design and lifestyle store located in Glasgow's West End, just across from the beautiful Botanic Gardens. They stock a unique curation of goods from iconic Nordic design houses to handmade, local wares made here in Scotland and beyond. We sat down with Karen from Hoos to hear a little about how she got started in the industry and the ups and downs of running your own company.
How long have you had your company for?
Almost three years.
What did you do before?
Before I was the Director of a Charity working with Children and Families.
Did you always want to work in interiors?
This is a new venture of me and I have always had a keen interest in design and architecture so its felt like a natural transition.
What was the inspiration for your company?
To bring great brands to Glasgow that were not available in a store in the West End and to also support young makers and designers giving them a platform in an independent store.
How did you get started?
Securing my shop unit, then managing a refit, months spent contacting agents and securing accounts with some of the best Danish Brands, they are very particular about who they let stock them!
How did you design your branding?
I worked with a recommend graphic artist and came up with the name Hoos myself and it just fitted so well!
Who’s your biggest inspiration?
I have friends who own one of the best restaurants in Glasgow and another in London who has the best haberdashery shop. They all inspired me to take the leap into opening my first shop!
Biggest challenge setting up your company?
It’s been a huge learning curve for sure, taking all my time and energy but thanks goodness I have always had lots of that. Selecting stock that I love and hopefully Glasgow does too and also developing the store and raising our profile as a new business!
Favourite thing about your job?
Meeting my customers and working with a great team of talented people.
Advice to people starting up in your industry?
Retail is tough as we know at the moment but if you have passion, energy and bring something new its worth going for it! cash flow is important but thats expected!
Thoughts on Scottish interiors?
Diverse like Scotland! and I feel Hoos has brought new brands that people have not seen before such as Ferm Living, Normann Copenhagen, Skagerrak, Hay, Muuto. I am the only retail store in Glasgow that has these amazing brands.
Dreams for the future?
To continue to grow the business if I had opened Hoos five years ago i would be looking for a bigger shop but small is good too!
Receiving an MBE for my work with Children and Families.
Favourite trend for AW18?
The new collections are inspiring and it’s about texture and the use of colour to bring pieces together in harmony, and feeling cosy. Green living is a big part of peoples homes again which is great. We love selling plants and pots in Hoos.
